Happenings in Freshman Advisory
This week some of our Freshman Advisories are participating in Wheeling Township’s Adopt-a-Family program to help make the holiday season a little brighter for some families in need.  Each section that is participating will raise at least $100.  The section that raises the most money will receive a lunch party, courtesy of the Freshman Class Board.

Before winter break, our students will go through a lesson to help let them know what finals are like in high school, and help develop a game plan to make sure they are prepared for finals.

Year in School Showcase
Sophomore Year is a year of self-exploration.
Students should be thinking about career pathways to technical school, community colleges, and four-year colleges including highly selective schools. Our students may take elective courses offered at Buffalo Grove High School to investigate their interests.  Counselors met with sophomore students in October during their English Classes to help them conduct Career and Personality Exploration.  Students may obtain further assistance from Ted Jackowski, Career Advisor, through participation in additional career activities. Students received their standardized test scores along with their predicted ACT scores.  Analyzing their academic records, test scores, and personality types, students explored career pathways and educational requirements to achieve their future goals.  The following cite contains the Sophomore Core Presentation:  http://bghs.d214.org/assets/2/Documents/Soph%20Core%202014-2015%20(3).pdf

College and Career Center Month in Review
College Applications
All applications requesting a transcript and/or recommendations due early January must be submitted to the College Career Center by December 1st  in order to be processed by December 19th.  The College Career Center will be closed from December 20th to January 4th.  We will reopen on Monday, January 5, 2015.

Class of 2015 Students and Parents
Don’t miss the opportunity to learn more about how to apply, qualify and evaluate financial aid opportunities.  Attend the D214 Financial Aid Night Program on Wednesday, Dec. 10th at 7:00 pm at Forest View Educational Center Field House (Enter Door #1, East of Theatre Entry).

Remember to complete the FAFSA as soon as possible after January 1, 2015.  Awards are made until funds are depleted.

Naviance/Scholarship Information
Naviance is a great place to search for scholarships.  Seniors need to sign on to their account and then select the Colleges section and go to Scholarships and Money.  Most of these scholarships are either local or national and are available in the College Career Center.  Remember that some of these scholarships may require a high school transcript and/or a letter of recommendation so please watch deadlines.  Students will need to complete a Transcript Request Form if needed.   Additional information on scholarships is available in the College Career Center.
“Ask the College Night”
On Tuesday, December 2nd the class of 2016 and their parents had the opportunity to ask college representatives from two and four year colleges questions about the college planning and application process.  This  program provided answers to many questions students and families have as they begin their college search process and finding the best “fit”.

Get to Know Counselor Bill Brown
This is my 12th year as a counselor.  I worked at Notre Dame High School and Round Lake High School before I came to Buffalo Grove.  In my personal life, I am the youngest of 10 children and I have 22 nieces and nephews. A typical Irish Catholic family.  I married my high school sweetheart and we have been together for 25 years.  I attended Lake Forest College for my undergraduate studies and Loyola University for my Masters degree in community counseling and school counseling.  In my free time I play volleyball, basketball and softball.  I also love to travel during the summer months.

Happenings in Freshman Advisory
We are beginning to talk about Technology Safety in freshman advisory.  With the increase in how much of our life technology becomes a part of, it is important for our students to understand how to use it in a responsible manner, so they don’t affect themselves, someone else, or jeopardize their futures.  The unit will culminate with Officer Baker, our police liaison, giving a presentation about some of the consequences of not using technology responsibly, both at BG and in a legal sense.

We also are wrapping up our college visits that all freshmen are going on.  Students who have not been on a trip yet will be going to either Loyola, Northwestern, or Benedictine.

Year in School Showcase (Junior Core Team)
Junior Year marks a turning point because for most students and families, it’s when college planning kicks into high gear. Counselors present to Juniors for two days during US History regarding the college planning process.  The goal of this process is to be as proactive and prepared as possible and to learn the four steps to college and career success: 1. Preparation 2. Research 3. Apply 4. Decide.  Juniors will bring home a blue folder filled with resources and a college comparison worksheet.  To view the Junior Core presentation, please visit:
